A Clinical Study of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis

Abstract
Thirty cases of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis seen at the Yonsei University Severance Hospital from 1966 to 1976 have been clinically analysed and the results follow:
1. It occurs more commonly in the male than the female,- with ratio of incidence of 4 : 1 among the sexes.
2. The mean age is 43.7 (range: 22-80) and the maximaF incidence occurs in 5th decade. And the incidence of 3rd decade is relatively high (5 cases, 16.7%).
3. Duration is ranged from 10 days to 6 years and below 2 years except 3 cases.
4. In site of presenting symptoms, cervical cord only is involved in 21 cases at onset, but in 15 cases at admission: Case of medulla or lumbar- cord in volved is infrequent.
5. All of them except 2, cases of progressive.bulbar palsy, 3 cases of progressive muscular, atrophy and 1 case of primary lateral sclerosis, are atrophic and spastic type.
